La Mancha

Interested in a 2011 buck or doe kid?  Place your tentative order NOW, as the does are due starting mid January, and if not preordered with deposit, all kids will be dam raised this season! La Manchas and Nubians.

The La Mancha is a breed unique to North America, being developed in the USA in the mid 1900's, by Eulah Fay Frey. The unique look of the breed, with the tiny ears, and the steady heavy milk production, combined with the ability to make a good meat animal as well, has given this breed status among goat breeders across North America.

We obtained our first La Manchas in 1974, when they were still a very new breed in Canada - the first La Mancha to come into Canada arrived in 1970. We promoted the breed at every opportunity. In 1978 we had the FIRST LA MANCHA IN CANADA to establish a proven milk record, earning her *P in 293 days, with 3.9% butterfat, and 2,411 pounds of milk production. In 1979 she also made her *M at a one day milking competition with 4.9kgs of milk in a 24 hour period. This doe, SLEEPYDALE KAY SE RA*M*P, is the foundation doe for our herd, and most of the La Manchas in our herd today are decended from this great doe.

We breed for milk production, show conformation, size, and dual purpose ability. We are stringent in our selection of new sires, and we do cull heavily. Each year we offer a limited number of doe kids for sale, and even more limited number of buck kids. La Mancha lamanchas lamancha goat goats dairy Lamanchas Lamanch

Nubian

The Nubian is a well known, well accepted breed throughout the world. Very distinct, with their long pendulous ears, and prominent convex (roman) nose, they are also an excellent dual purpose breed, being both heavy milkers with higher butterfats, and good meat weights on kids. They are noted for being "vocal", they have something to say about almost everything...something to consider when you have neighbours. They are also the most colorful breed in general.

We obtained our first Nubians in 1967, lovely big spotted does, from our friend Jeanne Farron of Pixieland herd (now deceased). At that time we loved them, but felt the breed was too fussy for our farm, so they went back to Jeanne. For many years, until her death, Jeanne was an important friend to us, and we assisted her with her Nubians (and other breeds as well), at shows, for trimming, disbudding, "goat sitting" whenever she had to go away. We always admired her Nubians, and kept telling her that we would buy one or two again when we saw the "right" kids in her herd...which we did frequently and those kids she always kept in her herd!

We started over with Nubians again in 1995. In 1996 we acquired a lovely young doe kid, Garden Gate Nightshade, from heavy milk and show bloodlines, and to  this doe our herd now is all closely related, having daughters and granddaughters as well as cousins in our herd. We also have a very colorful herd, lots of spots and patches, which we like.

Each year we offer a limited number of doe kids, and very limited number of buck kids.

Llamas

The Llama is a unique creature...able to survive at high altitudes amongst some of the harshest winter conditions habitable, able to be trained easily to serve man as a beast of burden, able to produce a fiber that not only can be spun into fine fabrics, but also sheds water. The Llama is a very special animal indeed. Let me list some of the positive and negative features below:

POSITIVE - the Llama has very low feed requirements compared to many other livestock...you can generally feed 2 adult Llamas the same OR LESS than 1 adult goat

-the Llama is generally a very hardy animal, requiring minimal vet care (if any)

-the Llama is able to take care of itself and protect other livestock that may be with it

-the Llama is LOW IMPACT, does not leave deep footprints or holes in the ground like cattle or horses, so is ideal to pack through wilderness terrain without disturbing the ecology of the area

-the Llama produces fiber that can be used in fabrics, knitted garments

-the Llama is not destructive to fences or farm buildings like horses and cattle can be

-the Llama is a very good mother to its' young

-and there are more positives that can be mentioned

NEGATIVE-the only downside to Llamas is...you cannot  have just ONE! They are like potato chips...you can't have just ONE! Even though a Llama does NOT require one of its' kind to keep it company, many people keep several.

So what do most folks have Llamas for? I have them because they are regal, peaceful creatures, and are relaxing to be around...they also are effective at keeping predators OUT of our sheep and goat yards, and away from our chickens. We shear a number every year, and will have Llama fiber products available for purchase soon, enquire if interested!

Almost anyone can work with a Llama, and work with Llama fiber. Coming soon - HOW TO USE A DROP SPINDLE . Check back to see how simple using a drop spindle to spin fiber can be!

And now, a tour of our Llamas

We obtained our first Llama in 1995, a lovely big white female. Was a bit of a "baptism by fire" I'm afraid.....she was in a pen with several other females and 2 males that were 2 years old...I questioned the owner about that, and was assured that "males cannot breed at less than 3 years of age", so for sure the female would not be pregnant. Well... we got her home, and I watched her, enjoyed watching her, as she interacted with my dairy goats. They treated her like a big goat, and she treated them like runty small Llamas, and every one was happy. After a while I began to suspect that she was pregnant - having bred livestock all my life, I could just NOT think otherwise. And I was right. The day arrived...and it was not fun. She was birthing a big cria, and it was stuck! We tried to get her to help her, but she was out to kill....so it took awhile to finally get a grip on her, without injury. Imagine, a BIG Llama making a huge production about a difficult birthing, very vocal and very much unhappy....and trying to get a grip on the cria to adjust it so it could be born...with the mother dancing all over the place. It was the longest 3 hours we had ever spent birthing livestock, but in the end, she delivered a huge male. Both were fine, but tired. Definitely not on the "to do" list for anyone with no livestock experience. And the rest is history....we loved the Llamas, so acquired more... and started raising a few.

Each year we raise a few crias (baby Llamas), and we do selectively breed for color, stamina, sound structure...fiber to us is not a high priority at this time, although we do have some lovely fiber animals in our herd, and raise a few excellent fiber cria each year. We are also working on breeding for large Llamas...we like things big around here. Our herd is now large enough that we can offer several Llamas for sale each year.
